On Sunday, March 11th, Arizona State University’s softball squad wrapped up yet another fantastic weekend against the University of Minnesota. The Sun Devils battled the Golden Gophers in a three-game series which began on Friday. Minnesota came in at #21 in the last rankings but dropped out of the top 25 this week.
On Friday, Giselle “G” Juarez took the mound for the Sun Devils. Juarez had great command and tied her season-high with 13 strikeouts. She gave up two hits but allowed no runs. Not only did Juarez have a great day on the mound, her teammates supported her at the plate. Jade Gortarez along with Morgan Howe each hit a home run while Danielle Gibson hit two home runs. The team’s collaborative effort resulted in a 6-0 shutout game.
The Sun Devils continued the series with a doubleheader on Sunday as Breanna Macha took the mound for the first game. Macha had herself a day by striking out four batters and not allowing a single walk. Once again, the Sun Devil bats were hot as Nichole Chilson, Kindra Hackbarth, and Skylar McCarthy each went yard to help push across another win against the Gophers with a score of 9-1 in five innings.
Juarez came back to pitch her second game of the series and closed out the weekend with a sweep with five strikeouts and only allowed one hit. The first three innings of the game were scoreless until Morgan Howe scored on a wild pitch. The Sun Devils continued to apply pressure on Minnesota’s defense with two runs in the fifth, and one more pushed across in the sixth.
The Sun Devils had a great weekend as the bats were lively, base running was aggressive and the pitchers were unstoppable. The Sun Devils have an overall record of 21 wins and 2 losses while holding an eleven-game win streak.
Iowa arrives in Tempe on Wednesday night for a doubleheader at 4 and 6pm before PAC12 play starts this Saturday against #1 ranked Washington, who is undefeated in 27 games.
