National Signing Day was today and Rivals has ASU ranked 5th in the PAC and 36th nationally. ASU had a huge afternoon getting three 4 stars within about an hour. Aashari Crosswell, Merlin Robertson, and Geordon Porter (3 star in many other rankings) were the 4 stars that all announced their commitment to ASU today.
Coach Herm Edwards said, “We fit a lot of needs, especially in a short period of time”. This could be referring to the running back position that will be without its two main players from last year, Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard. ASU went after a lot of defensive backs as well, signing just two defensive linemen. Let’s look at some of the players the Sun Devils have signed.
ASU signees by state:
Arizona, Colorado, Lousiana: 1
Jarrett Bell – 3 Star (#63 OG)
Bell is a 6’4” 290 lb offensive lineman that was formerly committed to Alabama but signed today with the Sun Devils. Bell has only played offensive line since his junior year and was previously a defensive player. He is a nimble athlete who does well pulling and getting to the second level.
Brock Sturges – 3 Star (#30 RB)
Sturges is a 5’10” 195 lb back from the famous Allen High School in the Dallas area. He runs with a low center of gravity that allows him to make shifty moves in the open field. Sturges highlights a deep class of ASU running back recruits.
A.J. Carter – 3 Star (#36 RB)
The next running back on the list is the 6’0” 225 lb A.J. Carter from Many, Louisiana. ASU doesn’t currently have a running back on the roster that has Carter’s size. It will be interesting to see how his body develops throughout his career. He could become a short yardage threat.
Demetrious Flowers – 3 Star (#57 RB)
Flowers is a 6’1” 210 lb running back from St. John Bosco high school in southern California. He is a downhill runner that loves to deliver a hit at the end of a run. I think Demetrius Flowers is going to emerge as the best running back of this class.
Isaiah Floyd – 3 Star (Unranked JUCO RB)
Rounding out the running back group is 5’8” 180 lb speedster Isaiah Floyd from City College of San Francisco. Floyd is yet another Sun Devil recruit that was previously committed to another team as he de-committed from New Mexico. We will see how ASU uses him in space.
Geordon Porter – 3 Star (Unranked WR)
Porter is a 6’2” 180 lb wide receiver from Southern California, and his recruiting heated up a ton the last month. The former Notre Dame commit had late offers from Texas A&M, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Florida. He chose ASU because he felt he could contribute immediately and ASU was one of his first major offers a year ago. He could be a really good down the field threat as a freshman with a 4.4 40 time.
Ralph Frias – 3 Star (Unranked OL)
Ralph Frias is a 6’7” 300 lb offensive lineman and the only recruit in this class from the state of Arizona. Frias comes from Safford High School in Safford, AZ. Despite the small size of Stafford, Frias had 8 offers from schools all across the country, including “defending national champion UCF”. You would think that he will only get stronger and more polished after getting coached up in Tempe.
Spencer Lovell – 2 Star (Unranked OL)
Spencer Lovell is another mammoth offensive lineman. He is 6’7” 310 lbs from Fort Collins, Colorado. According to Rivals, Lovell had only 1 offer from Colorado State. When you watch his highlights, it’s hard to wonder why that is. He shows impressive athleticism for a man his size.
Brandon Aiyuk – 2 Star (Unranked JUCO WR)
Brandon Aiyuk is a 6’1”, 180 lb wide receiver from Sierra Community College in Rocklin, California. He had 12 offers, 2 of them from Power 5 schools. Aiyuk’s highlights show strong hands and an ability to win the 50/50 balls.
Casey Tucker – Grad Transfer OL from Stanford
Casey Tucker is a 6”6’ 300 lb offensive lineman who has transferred to ASU for his final college season. He will compete for a starting tackle position this season as he started 22 games altogether before getting hurt last season. He started all 14 games during Christian McCaffrey and the 2015 Rose Bowl team.
Merlin Robertson – 4 Star (#5 ILB)
ASU’s top signee was 6’3”, 220 linebacker Merlin Robertson from Serra High School in Southern California. Robertson was recruited by new ASU linebackers coach Antonio Pierce. His highlights show solid sideline to sideline range. We will see how Robertson fits into the mix at linebacker after the graduation of D.J. Calhoun and Alani Latu.
Aashari Crosswell – 4 Star (#6 S)
Crosswell is a 6’1″, 185 lb safety from Long Beach Poly High School. He was recruited by Antonio Pierce, who is the former head coach of the Jackrabbits. Crosswell had 29 scholarship offers and chose Arizona State over USC. That’s pretty huge and shows the Southern California recruiting value of Antonio Pierce.
Reggie Hughes – 4 Star (#45 OLB)
Reggie Hughes is a 6’2”, 205 lb linebacker from Southern California. He is a relentless blitzer with solid speed and aggression. He had offers from 11 different schools all across the country but chose Arizona State in the early signing period.
Stanley Lambert – 3 Star (Unranked S)
Lambert is a 6’3”, 205 lb safety from San Antonio. He played offense, defense, and special teams in high school. Lambert showed an aggressiveness on defense and a strong ability to come up and make tackles. His long frame will likely bulk up at ASU.
Michael Matus – 3 Star (#60 DE)
Matus is a 6’2’, 230 lb defensive end from Katy, Texas. He had 15 scholarship offers, many from top academic institutions. His athleticism and pass-rushing ability could have him getting after Pac-12 quarterbacks in no time.
Christian LaValle – 3 Star (#51 ILB)
Christian LaValle is a 6’0”, 215 linebacker from Mission Viejo, California. He chose ASU over the three military academies and Duke. LaValle’s highlights show a strong ability to meet the ball carrier in the hole and stop them cold.
Ely Doyle – 3 Star (#90 S)
Doyle is a 6’1”, 185 lb safety from Southern California. Based on his highlight tape, it seems his strength is coming up to put big hits on ball carriers. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was moved to linebacker.
Dominique Harrison – 3 Star (#58 JUCO CB)
Harrison is a 6’0″, 180 lb JUCO transfer cornerback from Blinn College. He had offers from ASU, Colorado, Iowa State, and West Virginia. Harrison will be a junior this season.
Cameron Phillips – 3 Star (Unranked S)
Phillips is a 6’2”, 180 lb safety from Houston. He was committed to SMU two weeks ago but signed with ASU today. He will likely bulk up his 6’2” frame once he starts working out at ASU.
Jermayne Lole – 3 Star (#83 DE)
Jermayne Lole is another Southern California recruit that Antonio Pierce was able to get for the Sun Devils. He is 6’2”, 250 lbs, and his highlights show an ability to shed blocks quickly and get into the backfield.
Darian Butler – 3 Star (#48 ILB)
Darien Butler is a 6’0”, 220 linebacker from southern California. He had 7 scholarship offers, 2 of them from Power 5 schools. He’s not the fastest player on the field, but he is a solid tackler.
Terin Adams – 3 Star (Unranked JUCO CB)
Terin Adams is a 6’0”, 190 lb JUCO transfer cornerback from City College of San Francisco. He had 6 offers including ASU, Illinois, and Kansas. His highlights show aggressive cover corner play and good ball skills.
