MLB: Each Team’s Winter Meetings Outlook

National League

Arizona Diamondbacks

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Closer, Corner Outfielder

Trade Pieces: Middle Infielders (Nick Ahmed, Chris Owings, Ketel Marte, Brandon Drury), SP Patrick Corbin, SP Zack Greinke

Outlook: The D-Backs will have to make small moves in order to shore up the bullpen and upgrade the corner outfield position from Yasmany Tomas. The Diamondbacks recently traded for Brad Boxberger and have shown interest in Brandon Kintzler. The D-Backs have also been talking to the Rangers about a potential Zack Greinke trade and the Yankees about Patrick Corbin and Brandon Drury.

Atlanta Braves

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young talent

Trade Pieces: OF Nick Markakis, OF Matt Kemp

Outlook: The Braves are looking to make the transition from veterans to talented prospects as they finish the final touches on their rebuild. The organization took a major hit due to the recent scandal that caused them to lose many of their international prospects. The Braves have the best farm system in baseball according to BleacherReport and are looking to bring in the talent that can allow them to make the next step to forming a winning ball club.

Chicago Cubs

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Closer

Trade Pieces: OF Kyle Schwarber, SS Addison Russell

Outlook: The Cubs are looking to establish themselves as a World Series contender once again. Kyle Schwarber’s name has been mentioned to bring in an established starting pitcher or closer. Names such as Alex Colome have been thrown around as potential closing options. They recently signed Brandon Morrow to shore up the setup role, but Morrow could close for the Cubs.

Cinncinati Reds

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent

Trade Pieces: CL Raisel Iglesias, OF Adam Duvall, OF Billy Hamilton

Outlook: The Reds are another team looking to bring in top-level prospect talent in order to build a strong group of players for the future. Closer, Raisel Iglesias, could potentially bring in a large return after a dominant 2017 season. Billy Hamilton has also been mentioned for teams in need of a center fielder too.

Colorado Rockies

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Closer, First Base

Trade Pieces: IF Ryan McMahon

Outlook: The Rockies have a ton of young depth in their starting rotation. In order to maximize it, the Rockies need to find a closer to finish games. Greg Holland could be brought back or the Rockies could look elsewhere in the reliever market. They also signed Chris Iannetta to fix their catching situation. Depending on what they plan to do with Ian Desmond, the Rockies could be looking for an outfielder or first basemen. They also just signed Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee for three years each.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Bullpen depth

Trade Pieces: OF Yasiel Puig, OF Alex Verdugo, 2B/OF Kike Hernandez, OF Joc Pederson

Outlook: The Dodgers are looking to shore up their bullpen in front of closer, Kenley Jansen. They may not be willing to part with top OF prospect Alex Verdugo, but could look to deal from their current OF depth at the MLB level in order to bring in a dominant reliever.

Miami Marlins

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent

Trade Pieces: OF Christian Yelich, SP Dan Straily, Sp Jose Urena, 2B Starlin Castro

Outlook: The recent moves of Dee Gordon, Giancarlo Stanton, and now Marcell Ozuna indicates that the Marlins are in full rebuild mode. For the Marlins, this entire offseason will be all about what they can receive in return for their established MLB talent. After unloading Stanton’s contract, the Marlins will now be looking to receive high-level prospects for Yelich and Castro.

Milwaukee Brewers

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Starting Pitching

Trade Pieces: OF Domingo Santana, OF Keon Broxton

Outlook: The Brewers surprised everyone emerging as contenders in 2017 going 86-76. Now, in order to make the push to postseason contenders, the Brewers need established starting pitching. With Jimmy Nelson out for the beginning of next season, the Brewers don’t have much behind Zack Davies and Chase Anderson. Domingo Santana has been mentioned at the Winter Meetings as a potential trade piece that could bring in that front line arm they need, considering they are unlikely to trade from their farm system.

New York Mets

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Starting Pitching Depth, Bullpen depth, First Baseman

Trade Pieces: SP Matt Harvey

Outlook: Everything that could have gone wrong for the Mets last year, did. Their roster was decimated with injuries, especially in the rotation. At these Winter Meetings, the Mets could shop Matt Harvey for some much-needed bullpen help. With some better luck health-wise and stronger middle relief, the Mets could experience a strong bounce-back season.

Philadelphia Phillies

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent

Trade Pieces: 2B Cesar Hernandez

Outlook: The Phillies will be linked with every major free-agent for the next two years. As a club that has tons of young talent but almost no veterans, the Phillies will be looking to make that final jump to a competitive team. Cesar Hernandez is an intriguing trade option with J.P. Crawford and Scott Kingery set as the middle infielders of the future. The Phillies have been linked to Manny Machado, but I predict they will wait a year for Maikel Franco to prove himself.  They will try to sign Machado next offseason when he’s a free agent.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Buy or Sell Mode: Undecided

Needs: Starting Pitching and Relief Help

Trade Pieces: SP Gerrit Cole, 2B/3B/OF Josh Harrison, OF Andrew McCutchen

Outlook: The Pirates need to commit to a full rebuild or go all in on this next season. With the addition of the right pieces, the Pirates could have the potential to compete, but I think a rebuild is the best option. The Pirates could bring in high-level prospects for Cole, Harrison and McCutchen. This could be an easier rebuild than most if all three are traded this offseason.

San Diego Padres

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent

Trade Pieces: RP Brad Hand, 3B Chase Headley

Outlook: The Padres are looking to continue building a team around young talent. They just traded with the Yankees for Chase Headley in a salary dump that netted them pitcher Bryan Mitchell. Brad Hand could bring in quality prospects, but the Padres showed at the deadline last year that it has to be the right deal. The Padres most likely will be targeting more young pitching prospects.

San Francisco Giants

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Relief Pitching, Corner Outfielder

Trade Pieces: SP Jeff Samardzija, 2B Joe Panik, 1B Brandon Belt

Outlook: With the organizational problems the Giants face, it would probably be best to start a rebuild, yet that doesn’t seem to be the route the current management wants to take. The Giants missed out on Stanton and Ohtani and now are going to try an maximize this year’s Winter Meetings to once again create a contender. The Giants will be looking for relief pitching and outfielders. They desperately need to find a middle of the order bat and have been included in rumors on Machado, Martinez, and Yelich.

St. Louis Cardinals

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Relief help, rotation depth/frontline starter, power bat

Trade Pieces: SP Sandy Alcantara, OF Tommy Pham, OF Randall Grichuk, OF Stephen Piscotty

Outlook: After missing out on Stanton, the Cardinals have reportedly struck a major deal to acquire Marcell Ozuna. This provides them the middle of the order bat they needed to contend offensively. Now, the focus will most likely be turned to pitching. An addition to the bullpen is needed at closer. The Cardinals have been linked to closer Wade Davis to help out newly signed, Luke Gregerson, in the late-inning role. The Cardinals are rumored to adding another power bat too. Machado, Donaldson, and Longoria are all potential options.

Washington Nationals

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Middle Relief/ Dominant closer

Trade Pieces: OF Victor Robles (99.9% untouchable)

Outlook: The Nationals seem to be set at almost every position but are looking to upgrade in order to take the final step to World Series contention. Coming short the past few years, the Nationals could view Victor Robles as a trade piece or the future after Bryce Harper leaves. The Nationals have been involved in rumors for Jake Arrieta.

American League

Baltimore Orioles

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Starting Pitching

Trade Pieces: 3B/SS Manny Machado, CL Zach Britton, RP Brad Brach

Outlook: The Orioles are in desperate need of starting pitching if they are going to have any chance of competing with the Red Sox and Yankees in the AL East. If the Orioles choose to trade Machado and Britton, they could bring in significant talent in return. They have also been involved in talks with the Pirates for Gerrit Cole but most likely won’t have the prospects to get a deal done. Matt Harvey is also a potential trade option that would cost less, in terms of prospects, than Cole. The Orioles also could be involved with free agent pitchers Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb.

Boston Red Sox

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Middle of the order bat, First Baseman, Starting Pitching Depth

Trade Pieces: OF Jackey Bradley Jr., 3B/1B Michael Chavis, C Blake Swihart

Outlook: The Red Sox missed David Ortiz bat last year and are now in need of a power bat after finishing last in the AL in home runs. The Sox seem to be the leader for who will acquire J.D. Martinez. They are also considering Eric Hosmer, Carlos Santana, Jose Abreu, and other first base options. With the arrest of Steven Wright, the Red Sox could also be looking for rotational depth.

Chicago White Sox

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young talent

Trade Pieces: SP James Shields, 1B Jose Abreu, OF Avisail Garcia

Outlook: The White Sox are in the midst of an extremely strong rebuild after bringing in talented prospects such as Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez, and Michael Kopech. The White Sox should continue this trend by looking for potential suitors for Abreu and Garcia.

Cleveland Indians

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: First Baseman, Outfield Upgrade, Relief Depth

Trade Pieces: SS Yu-Cheng Chang

Outlook: The Indians have their entire rotation returning, so are immediate contenders once agin. Now, the task is to upgrade around those players to bring a championship to Cleveland. Carlos Santana could be brought back to play first. The Indians have also been involved in rumors for the Christian Yelich.

Detroit Tigers

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent

Trade Pieces: 2B Ian Kinsler, 3B Nick Castellanos, SP Michael Fulmer

Outlook: The Tigers have done a good job of starting their rebuild by receiving intriguing prospects for Justin Verlander, Justin Upton, and Justin Wilson. It may be challenging to trade Miguel Cabrera or Jordan Zimmerman due to their large contracts. This leaves Kinsler, Fulmer, and Castellanos as the Tigers best trade options.

Houston Astros

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Closer, Outfield Upgrade, Starting Pitching Depth

Trade Pieces: OF Derek Fisher, 1B A.J. Reed

Outlook: The Astros have almost everyone coming back from their 2017 World Series team. They most likely won’t make any major moves, yet could look for a starting pitcher. The Astros have the prospects and money to pursue a top player, as well. They have been mentioned with guys such as Yu Darvish, Christian Yelich, Alex Colome, and Chris Archer.

Kansas City Royals

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young talent

Trade Pieces: Kelvin Herrera, Whit Merrifield

Outlook: The Royals failed to plan ahead for the loss of Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, and Mike Moustakas. Now, they are forced to start again. This involves getting what they can for closer Herrera and 2017 breakout player, Whit Merrifield.

Los Angeles Angels

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: First Baseman, Second Baseman, and Relief Pitchers

Trade Pieces: C.J. Cron

Outlook: After winning the Ohtani Sweepstakes, the Angels are looking to build a contender. The Angels boast good rotation depth if healthy. They depserately need a second baseman and could look for an upgrade at first over C.J. Cron though. The Angels have been rumored to be involved with Mike Moustakas and Ian Kinsler.

Minnesota Twins

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs:  Starting Pitching, Relief Pitchers

Trade Pieces: Brian Dozier

Outlook: After signing Michael Pineda to a two year deal, the Twins are still looking to upgrade their rotation and bullpen for 2018. The Twins surprised everyone in 2017 en route to a wild card birth. The Twins have been heavily involved with Yu Darvish and are looking for front line arms to take them into legitimate contention.

New York Yankees

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Second Baseman, Third Base Man, Starting Pitching Depth

Trade Pieces: OF Jabari Blash, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clint Frazier

Outlook: The Yankees are creating a modern day evil empire. With the addition of Stanton, the Yankees potentially boast the best lineup in baseball. The attention turns to what they will do next. They have traded Chase Headley to clear salary, so they are likely looking for a third baseman. Todd Frazier would fit, allowing Gleyber Torres to slot in when he is ready. They could also look for an upgrade over Torreyes at second. The Yankees have also been looking at starting pitching, including D-Backs Patrick Corbin and Tiger’s Michael Fulmer. Brandon Drury has been rumored to the Yankees from the D-Backs as well, and he can play both second and third base.

Oakland Athletics

Buy or Sell Mode: Sell

Needs: Young Talent, Relief Pitching, Outfield

Trade Pieces: Khris Davis, Blake Treinen, Jed Lowrie

Outlook: The Athletics are committed to a full rebuild after trading Sean Doolittle, Sonny Gray, and Ryan Madson. The Athletics will continue this trend at the Winter Meetings, looking for controllable young talent for the future. They have recently been linked to the Cardinals outfielder, Stephen Piscotty.

Seattle Mariners

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Starting Pitching Depth, Relief Pitching Depth

Trade Pieces: OF Braden Bishop

Outlook: Jerry Dipoto has shown that he is willing to make a trade at any moment. The Mariners missed out on Ohtani but now change their focus to finding relief help. The Mariners have been linked to OF Jay Bruce, and could still be major players in the free agent relief and starting pitching market.

Tampa Bay Rays

Buy or Sell Mode: Undecided

Needs:

Trade Pieces: Chris Archer, Jake Odorizzi, Alex Colome, Evan Longoria

Outlook: The Rays have to decide if they want to continue with the players they have or start a rebuild. The Rays are notorious for trading from their starting pitching depth in order to find cheaper, controllable players. This offseason will be all about whether or not they trade studs, Archer, Longoria, and Colome.

Texas Rangers

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Relief Pitching, Starting Pitching, Outfield, DH

Trade Pieces: Jurickson Profar, Shin-Soo Choo

Outlook: The Rangers are looking to add either a frontline arm or big bat, if not both. They have been involved in talks for Zack Greinke, Matt Harvey, and Jake Arrieta. Jurickson Porfar has fallen from favor with the Rangers, yet he could be a trade piece that brings in a high quality player. The Rangers desperately need to find a stud in order to have a legitimate shot at contention in 2018.

Toronto Blue Jays

Buy or Sell Mode: Buy

Needs: Outfield, Relief Pitching Depth

Trade Pieces: Josh Donaldson

Outlook: The Jays seem to be stuck in a middle ground. They have the starting pitching to compete but will need upgrades in the bullpen and outfield to have a legitimate shot. The question is whether or not to trade Josh Donaldson, who is owed $17 million this year. He could potentially bring in a return that would spark an effective rebuild. They must pull that trigger soon though as he is a free agent in 2018.
